About us

The Southern University System is a public historically black university system based in Louisiana, recognized as the only one of its kind in the United States. Its headquarters are located in the Joseph Samuel Clark Administration Building on the Southern University campus in Baton Rouge. Established to provide education for persons of color, the system includes five institutions across Louisiana's major cities. The flagship institution, Southern University and A&M College, offers over 30 academic programs leading to bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. Other institutions in the system include Southern University at New Orleans, Southern University at Shreveport, the Southern University Law Center, and the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center. Each institution operates independently with its own budget and leadership. The system is known for its diverse student body, representing more than 20 countries, and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
